About Morganza Floodway Management Area

The Morganza Floodway Management Area is a large-scale flood control project designed to divert water from the Mississippi River during high water events to protect downstream communities like Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Located in south-central Louisiana, this area encompasses extensive wetlands, bayous, marshes, and managed floodplain forests that provide vital habitat for a wide range of wildlife species. The management area supports diverse bird populations, including waterfowl and shorebirds, making it a favored destination for birdwatchers and hunters alike. Though flooding is the primary function of the area, during dry periods it offers recreational opportunities such as fishing, wildlife observation, and boating along the waterways. The topography includes flat lowlands with seasonal inundations, supporting both freshwater and brackish ecosystems. The area's landscape is largely shaped by its role in flood mitigation, with levees, floodgates, and spillway infrastructure controlling the flow of water during flood events. Wildlife enthusiasts and outdoor recreationists are drawn to the management area because of its rich biodiversity and the chance to experience Louisiana’s classic wetland environment. While not a traditional park or forest with developed trails and visitor services, knowledgeable visitors can explore parts of the floodway by boat or on foot along levee roads and adjacent waterways. The combination of flood management infrastructure and natural wetlands makes Morganza Floodway a unique protected area blending engineering and ecology.
